The computer is very good at simple tasks without having to search for content around the task that may cause a very different meaning. This is often true and most importantly translating ordinary text is hard to program. Below are a few examples of websites to translate text.
The first version of this webpage was made on May 31, 2009, meanwhile much has been changed.

All kinds of protocols are used to store the information for dictionaries, thesauri and translations. One of them that is rather intriguing is the dict protocol used in StarDict [1] and also (using a conversion tool) for the Apple iMac dictionary.

Babylon

The expensive Babylon [2] software delivers a good dictionary, but the online-translator-site is poor in full text translation. Also the license is strictly for one computer and not user based. Babylon has a very large language support, but the quality still is not more than reasonable.

Dictionary

Search Engine Ask [3] has a simple but nice looking text-translation service (powered by Google) including also Dutch <-> German. The site also contains a Dictionary, Thesaurus, Encyclopedia


Google Translator

Google [4] is one of the better translators.
Update 2022, one of the best free translators which a lot extra.

iTools

The general iTools [5] site has a wrapper page for dictionaries. So this is not a text language translator! Reason to put this site is the interesting wrapped websites. Merriam Webster, Cambridge International, Wordsmyth, Idioms/Sayings and much more.

Langenberg

Langenberg provides a wrapper for Google, Yahoo, X10/Free Translation[6], Applied Language[7] and Intertran[8]. The supported languages are limited. The translations of the not already descripted translators is poor.

Reverso

Reverso, the world’s most advanced free web translator/service in French, Dutch, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese (Total ). Translations are all right. Today the site (and the mobile apps) have the features Translation, Context, Grammar Check, Synonyms, Conjugation and more...

Stardict

A SourceForge project which is based on the dict protocol [1].

SystraNet

SYSTRAN Der Weltweit führende Hersteller von Übersetzungssoftware has a text translation site with limited languages (Dutch <-> English/French).The quality of the translation is good.

TranslateIt

TranslateIt is a Russian Dictionary Engine for Windows and Mac. It uses dictionaries with the extension .mdict and .dict.

Wordreference

The WordReference Dictionaries are free online translation dictionaries based on the English language. The most popular dictionaries are the Spanish Dictionary, French Dictionary and the Italian Dictionary, but German, Russian are also available. So not Dutch here.

Yahoo Babel Fish

top Yahoo Babel fish has been one of the better translators.
