Flickr has been designed by Yahoo and is currently Yahoo and Flickr are now part of Oath and are members of the Verizon family of companies.

Introduction

Flickr is the a photo backup utility which enables the creation of (internet) Albums. The tooling exists on:

  • The Flickr Website at https://www.flickr.com
  • Photo uploader apps for
    • Android
    • Apple Mac the Flickr Uploadr, with on 15 September 2017 Version 1.0.1403.
    • Apple iOS Flickr Auto-Uploadr, with on 15 September 2017 Version 4.3.3 (6677).
    • Windows

The Flickr uploadr tools automatically scan (preferred) folders on your computer or devices and uploads the find (new) photos to the Flickr Website. Please note that this mean that all made photos of an iPad/iPhone are uploaded automatically to Flickr and also all mad photos of an external Camera are uploaded when they transferred to an OSX Computer.

The Flickr Website offers the possibility to:

  • Add metadata (Titles, Descriptions, Tags, Location etc) to the uploaded photos
  • Create Web photo Albums.

So far so good. This is a very good and preferred way to make a backup of all your photos.

The bad thing happens when you want to store metadata of the photos, such as Titles, Descriptions and Tags. To illustrate which problems occur I have made scenarios,

Scenario

An Apple OSX and iOS user (Mac, Macbook and an iPhone, iPad) may want to use the Apple OSX Photo app and library to manage his photo library. If you do that, you have the options to:

  • Add the metadata to the imported photos
  • Create an Album of a collection/subset of the photos.

Next the Photo app offers options to:

  • Upload photos to Flickr unfortunately without the added metadata
  • Export photos with the metadata.

Here you see the the following problems:

  • Where do you maintain the metadata?
    • On your own computer
    • On the Flickr Website
    • You may want to have the information added once and have it on both Flickr, (Google) and Local computer.
  • How do you upload your photos?
    • Automatic from all devices
    • User managed after adding the metadata.
    • Combination the above named options.

Solution 1

First get all the photos. Import all the photos in Apple Photo App.
Please note: Do NOT use iTunes.

  • Get the photos from your external devices to your Apple Computer into one folder:
    • For iOS you can install WiFi Photo Transfer (Voxeloid Kft.) or an equal app [1].
    • For your camera use the memory card to transfer the data.
  • Launch the Photos App
  • In Photos do FileImport and go to the folder containing the required photos.

Add the metadata in Photos App.

  • Right click on a photo and select Get Info.
  • Make the required changes into the opened popup.
