Enterprise Data Modeling Using XML Schema

With its rich support for associating programmatic data types to information items, and its complete implementation of the object oriented data modeling framework, the XML Schema Definition (XSD) language stands poised to pave the way for a paradigm shift in enterprise application development.

The whitepaper, written by Educational Specialist, Nick Nagel, PhD, is intended to explicitly articulate this insight and demonstrate by way of example how the XSD provides just the right levels of abstraction, and just the right degree of precision, to generate a highly constrained and formal data model that can be used to propagate business rules end-to-end in enterprise systems.

XML 2007 Tutorial – Using Altova Tools with IBM DB2 9 pureXML

At the XML 2007 conference, Altova and IBM presented a tutorial on the benefits of using Altova tools (XMLSpy, MapForce, StyleVision, and DatabaseSpy) when working with XML data stored in IBM DB2 9 databases.

The tutorial shows you how to:

  • Visualize database structure and work with database objects using GUIs.
  • Easily query database tables using SQL, SQL/XML, and XQuery statements or run other database transactions, including creating an XML index.
  • Edit and debug XQuery statements with a graphical editor.
  • Edit XML data retrieved from a database, validate it, and save it back using a GUI.
  • Manage XML Schemas stored in the DB2 Schema Repository.
  • Transform XML data into different formats and use data filtering.

“With each new release, Altova continues to add unique functionality to an already robust development tool,” said Gayle Rodcay, senior editor for Windows IT Pro. “With extended support for Office Open XML (OOXML) in XMLSpy 2008, users can now extract, edit, query, and transform XML data from within Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 files. Altova’s support for OOXML clearly demonstrates their strategic importance to the market, competitive advantages, and the value they provide to their customers.”
